If you’re planning to learn to dive on Christmas Island, or you’re already certified and looking to get back in the water, one question comes up all the time:

“Does it matter which agency I trained with?”

Or more specifically:

“Can I dive with you if I’m PADI certified?”

The short answer — yes, you can.

You do not need to dive with the same agency you trained with.

Across Australia and worldwide, dive certifications from SSI, PADI, SDI, NAUI, BSAC,ISC and other recognised organisations are all accepted interchangeably for recreational diving.

So if you’re arriving on Christmas Island already certified — you can just come dive with us.

All organisations have a slightly different approach to learning

Where things do differ a little- is how courses are delivered.

At Extra Divers, we primarily teach through SSI. Not because it’s “better” — but because it suits Christmas Island diving.

Conditions on Christmas Island don’t always fit neatly into a fixed schedule.

Swell, weather, and timing all play a role. So having the flexibility to adapt training makes a real difference to you as someone learning new skills

It means we can:

- Work around conditions rather than force a timetable

- Let you progress at a pace that suits you, dependent on your schedule

- Focus on building real confidence in the ocean.

The theory side is flexible too.

Many divers complete their learning online before they arrive, and we can support multiple languages including English, Chinese-Mandarin & Cantonese, German & French.

It’s a more practical way to fit diving into your trip — without lowering standards.

The end result is exactly the same: a recognised certification and the skills to dive safely.

Already certified? No barriers

This is where a lot of confusion comes in and we get asked all the time the same question.

PADI or SSI Certified Scuba Diving on Christmas Island is for all!

Some divers believe they need to dive with a centre from the same agency they trained with — for example, only diving with a PADI centre if they hold a PADI certification.

That’s not how the industry works.

If you’ve trained with PADI — you can dive with us.

If you’ve trained with SSI — you can dive with us.

If it’s SDI, NAUI, BSAC or another recognised agency — also no problem.

We regularly dive with people from all training backgrounds and believe it or not we learn from each other and make better divers!

There’s no need for crossover courses or unnecessary repetition. We’ll simply get a feel for your experience and get you in the water.

Learning, improving, or just enjoying the diving

Some people come here to learn to dive on Christmas Island for the first time.

Others arrive with plenty of dives logged and just want to explore.

In both cases, the focus is the same:

- Real diving, in real conditions

- Building comfort and confidence

- Enjoying the experience

If you want to take the next step, we can guide you into advanced training, Nitrox, or further — based on what actually suits you. Open Water is just the beginning and you learn basic skills for the first time.

Why Christmas Island makes a difference?

This isn’t a high-volume training destination.

You’re diving in open ocean, with:

- Clear water and excellent visibility

- Healthy reefs and marine life

- Quiet dive sites

It’s an environment that naturally builds better divers — because you’re learning in the conditions you’ll actually dive in.

Final thoughts:

If you’re comparing SSI vs PADI in Australia, it’s worth knowing the agency doesn’t limit where you can dive.

What matters is:

- The way you’re taught

- The environment you learn in

- And how confident you feel in the water

If you’re coming to Christmas Island — whether to learn or just to dive — you’re welcome here.

Any certification. Any background.

Just good diving.

See you in the water!
