Divemaster Trainee

We run a dive master traineeship here on Christmas Island for any certified diver wishing to become a dive professional (up to the divemaster level).

It is an unpaid position, but offers dive training at nearly no cost.

Afterwards, many of our previous interns have gained employment as a divemaster in various parts of the world.

Dependent on your current level of diving, there are some minimum requirements to achieve before commencing the Dive Guide & Divemaster course.

We have a number of options to complete your Divemaster traineeship, however, we ask that you are a minimum of an Open Water Diver in any organisation before committing to the traineeship.

We adapt the training to suit you!

If you are an international applicant, you must qualify and hold a valid Australian Working Holiday Visa.

International participants may not enter commence our traineeship on a normal tourist visa.

Extra Divers Australia does not cover the cost of this working holiday visa.

At Extra Divers Christmas Island the tasks that will be involved in daily operations include the following:

  • Helping to load dive gear and tanks onto the truck and transport down to the boat for loading

  • Boat handling skills, including proper rope handling, emergency procedures (man over-board, fire, abandon ship), and occasional driving

  • Assisting with dive groups, students and snorkelers in the water

  • Cleaning and organising equipment at the dive centre

  • Helping with equipment maintenance

  • Guest relations - interacting with guests, chatting about fish, diving, etc.

  • Assisting with shop sales (dive equipment, swimwear, jewellery, etc)

  • Filling air and EANx tanks (using a nitrox membrane system)

  • Dive guiding (once a certain level of experience is established)

Most days we will be more busy with the operations in the morning and then have afternoons free for training. It's a nice balance as you get to put all the skills to practical use with real divers in the morning and then come back and fine tune your own skills through skill demonstrations, various workshops (both wet and dry), briefing practices, and theory.

For the internship, all trainees must have their own personal full diving equipment.

This includes: BCD, regulator, dive computer, wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, SMB (marker buoy), compass, knife and dive torch (for night dives and cavern diving).

We have a decent range of dive equipment here at the shop (all Aqualung products) and as a trainee you will receive a discount on equipment, so if you don't have everything then you can get it here.

We also expect a great attitude from interns - polite with guests and other staff members, a willingness to learn, team orientated, and motivated to dive and talk about diving. If we feel there is an unwillingness to learn or cooperate we will terminate the internship and internship privileges. We are always happy to assist in your learning, take your training seriously, and are available 24/7 for questions about diving.

We ask for a minimum 3 month commitment from interns in order to provide enough time to do the appropriate training and also be able to get you familiar with the dive sites, daily routine and boat handling so that you will be a useful divemaster elsewhere in the world.

Once the internship is completed then there is the possibility to stay on as a dive master to gain more experience, but this is not a paid position.

If you’re interested, please email your CV, and cover letter detailing why you would want to become a Divemaster!

Currently in 2023/24 there are limited positions, dependent on accommodation availability, customer arrivals and forward bookings.
