Are you a qualified Divemaster looking to gain experience in a unique Australian dive environment?

Join Extra Divers Australia on Christmas Island during the annual red crab migration for a short-term educational and observational dive experience.

This is an opportunity to experience Christmas Island, dive in one of Australia's most remote marine environments and learn about the operation of a professional island dive centre.

 

What you'll experience

During your stay, you may have the opportunity to:

  • Shadow experienced professional Divemasters and dive professionals

  • Observe daily dive-centre operations

  • Learn about dive planning, site selection and safety procedures

  • Observe customer briefings and dive preparation

  • Learn about equipment and cylinder management systems

  • Observe vessel procedures and marine operations

  • Discuss professional diving practices with our team

  • Experience the annual red crab migration

  • Dive and explore Christmas Island's spectacular reefs

  • Experience the arrival of whale sharks and other marine life

  • Build your knowledge of remote-island diving operations

The focus is on learning, observation, professional development and personal diving experience.

 

This is an experience, not a staffing position

This opportunity is designed as an educational and observational experience.

Participants will not replace paid staff or undertake routine operational work for Extra Divers. Participants will not be expected to conduct customer dives, provide customer service, give customer briefings, prepare customer equipment, perform boat crew duties or carry out other work required to operate the business.

You will be learning alongside our professional team and observing how a remote Australian dive centre operates.

 

Who we're looking for

We're looking for qualified Divemasters who are:

  • Passionate about diving and marine life

  • Interested in professional diving operations

  • Safety-conscious and responsible

  • Keen to develop their knowledge and experience

  • Interested in remote and island diving

  • Excited to experience the red crab migration

  • Comfortable learning and observing as part of a small professional team

 

Christmas Island

Christmas Island is one of Australia's most unusual dive destinations.

During the red crab migration, millions of red crabs move across the island towards the coast, creating one of the world's great wildlife spectacles.

Christmas Island also offers exceptional diving, dramatic underwater terrain, endemic marine life and seasonal encounters with whale sharks.

 

Dates

October – December 2026

Experience periods are generally 2–3 weeks, subject to availability and travel arrangements.

For successful participants, Extra Divers provides:

  • Return flights from Perth to Christmas Island

  • Shared accommodation, with your own room

  • Opportunity to dive and experience Christmas Island

  • Access to professional knowledge and mentoring from our dive team

 

Important information

This is an unpaid educational and observational experience and is not a paid employment position.

Participation is voluntary and the purpose of the arrangement is to provide professional exposure, learning and personal diving experience.

Participants will not be used to replace employees or perform work that would otherwise be undertaken by paid staff.
